- Role in the Band: Guitarist, vocalist, musical coordinator
- Overview: Greg is known for his tasteful and interesting guitar parts and soulful voice.
Musical Background
- Early Influences: Growing up in the 80’s the diversity of music was unprecedented. My early influences were Rush, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Depeche Mode, Dead or Alive, New Order, Echo & The Bunnymen… pretty much everything I heard on the radio and in the clubs
- Previous Bands/Projects: I got my start in a 2-man college band called Moka Lava doing interesting performances to covers.
- Instrument Proficiency: I figured out early on that collecting guitars and gear wasn’t going to make me into the guitar player I wanted to be. So after I bought my first high-quality guitar (1994 Gibson Lucille), I’ve stuck with it, although that one was replaced by a 1997 Gibson Lucille that my amazing wife gave to me as a wedding present. As a result, whatever happens when I play, I know it’s me and not the guitar I’ve been playing for decades.
Contributions
- Key Responsibilities: We have a band of accomplished musicians who come prepared and ready to work. My main role is to serve as the practice and musical coordinator. I set the practice agenda, coordinate musical parts, arrangements, changes, endings, etc… and of course I play guitar and sing on a few songs
- Favorite Song to Perform: Whipping Post! I just love that song, the time signatures, the groove, the exploration of different musical genres, and I love the freedom it provides to reach as a guitarist!
- Memorable Performance: The Kraken in Cardiff was really our coming out party and we had an absolute blast playing to a dancing, drinking, fun-loving crowd. My wife was leading the charge which made it all the more rewarding and memorable!
Personal Insights
- Hobbies and Interests: I’ve been surfing since I was 12 and still get out there at least 4 days a week. I also love fishing and the outdoors in general. My wife and I used to go hiking and backpacking almost every weekend before kids. Now that our kids are older I’m hoping our passion for the outdoors is shared with them, and that we’ll get out there more frequently. I also love driving Sports Cars (Porsche’s especially)!
- Fun Fact: I used to race road bikes specializing as a sprinter in criteriums. I won several races, but my true claim to fame as a cyclist is as the first ever winner at the now infamous Dana Point Grand Prix (early in my racing career the Cat 5’s went out first and I won that race).
- Favorite Band/Artist: As a guitarist, I find myself intently listening to the Allman Brothers more than ever. But I still love Rush, Zeppelin and The Black Crowes (Southern Harmony through the never released Taller Sessions mainly). I listen to everything from the early Library of Congress Blues recordings to 80’s New Wave. My musical interests really fell-off once when Producers took over from musicians (mid-90’s).
Future Aspirations
- Goals with Kingfish: I really just want to continue having fun making music with this great group of guys. I also want to book good time slots at the venues we love to play at. Stretch goal is to play the Belly Up!
- Personal Ambitions: To raise my amazing kids into kind, independent, successful (however they define that) adults that give me lots of grandkids!
Closing Thoughts
- Message to Fans: Thank you for your support! You make playing out fun!
- Social Media Handles: I don’t really do social media so I’ll leave this to Kevin and our Kingfish handles.
